The old and the new

Very bad rain this morning BUT had to go find some cake supermarkets all shut then went back out at lunchtime as rain stopping.

Back into town for the parade starting at 1700 FAB as usual.

All the fun of the fair arriving

Friends drove down to see me so coffee and catch up really lovely day. Bumped into another guy on site I have known for many years now with Spanish residency for 5 years well done.

Had a couple of walks into town it takes an hour to the top and back some statues lovely flowers and they are getting ready to set the streets alight will show you the pictures tomorrow as they don’t light until 1900.

Back into town 1830 for a look around 1900 the bells struck, the fires were lit, and it started to rain UGH!

15 January 2026 SPAIN Benicasim

Had a walk along the beach into Peniscola and saw the sun on the beach back to the van packed up and drove an hour down to Benicassim

Booked in the new reception is now open. Had a walk into town to find out what’s going on in the next 2 weeks O goody a BULL run and paella thingy and lots of other things.

Had a walk down the beach in the evening super.

14 January 2026 SPAIN Peniscola

Yesterdays pictures as I have only walked into town twice today along the beach as I have been doing yo much cycling.

Lots of the old working heritage about.

Lovely birds sunbathing.

The seafront toilets leave a lot to be desired ??

While taking these tourist train pictures I saw the statue I took was called VENUS.

Usual cycling and walkabout will put todays pictures up tomorrow BUT NOW GRAFITTI Hurray

This one looks like its smoking weed Eh Dude. I do find these accidently and don’t go looking for them I turn left and right in life when my soul tells me to and don’t ignore the thought.

12 January 2026 SPAIN Peniscola (Graffiti tomorrow)

Walk into Peniscola for shopping coffee and Cake (Caracola) back to the site then a couple of cycles around went on the back road towards Benicarlo the amount of campsites and camping places is good around the area away from the beach even some free ones.

The one below is behind our campsite can imagine them nipping in after hours for a shower ? maybe !

11 January 2026 SPAIN Peniscola ( Will leave graffiti again while tomorrow)

Cycle up to Benicarlo first thing took a picture of the castle again just to show you the weather today.

Is the name the wrong way round?

Its lovely and warm but one of the locals has put the outside heating on.

I do love these traditional dress parades stunning.

10 January 2026 SPAIN Peniscola (will leave the graffiti until tomorrow)

Last night out clubbing

Walk into town for coffee and a bit of shopping then back for lunch.

These rubbish bins are nicely hidden away like it.

These would make a lot of pigeon pie.

Something Special on today so a cycle up into the old town then searching out the event.

Very interesting.

The “Descent from the tree” for Sant Antoni in Peñíscola refers to a unique tradition during the Saint Anthony festivities (January) where a large, decorated pine tree is climbed, and participants (often young men) descend it, symbolizing a joyful, daring act within the broader celebrations of bonfires, blessings of animals, and processions honoring St. Anthony the Great, patron saint of animals. It’s a key event in the town’s historic celebrations, distinct from the typical romerías (pilgrimages) to the Ermita de San Antonio.

What it involves:

• The Tree:A tall pine tree, often decorated and erected in a central location.
• The Climb & Descent:Young men (and sometimes others) climb the tree and then descend in a festive, sometimes chaotic, manner.
• The Festivities:This descent is part of larger events that include:
  • Bonfires (Fogueres):Lit on Saturday night for feasting and celebration.
  • Animal Blessing:On Sunday, animals and horses are blessed.
  • Parades:Decorated carriages and cavalry parade through the old town

Not sure this was happy about all the horses !

Fab looking hotel Peniscola is full of hotels a very big tourist town.

This metal work on the roundabout is a giant crab.

I have had a really good cycle around Benicarlo and been to new streets I have not been before a very SOUL charging day.

Went right across town to the back of BENICARLO Ha Ha

Coffee here like been in a greenhouse.

8 January 2026 SPAIN Peniscola

Moved this morning a steady 2 hour drive down stopping for a coffee at one of the services. Toll just outside Sitges gone up in price for the new year.

On arrival given a good pitch and only one other English couple on site, temperature gone up to 17 degrees today just a short drive down the coast a micro climate EH!

Got the bike out for a quick look around the lovely castle and a very very BIG crane.

The van on the pitch behind me should not run out of water.
